Shabbat Batzel
Shabbat in the Shade
A monthly gathering under the branches of Lady Wisdom's tree.
What happens when Chokmah (Lady Wisdom) becomes Someone we encounter rather than an idea we study?
Shabbat in the Shade is a monthly online gathering devoted to Lady Wisdom, sacred time, temple memory, embodied knowing, and the older currents of biblical and Jewish tradition.
Each gathering brings scholarship into encounter through teaching, conversation, prayer, sacred sound, and simple embodied practice. We will explore Wisdom not only as a subject preserved in ancient texts, but as a way of inhabiting the world.
Through Her, we are able to cultivate our deeper capacities for attention, discernment, blessing, hospitality, voice, body, and sacred time.
No specialist knowledge required to participate. Come curious.

Details on the six-month journey
October 16 · Under Her Tree: Who Is Chokmah?
Meet Lady Wisdom not merely as an abstract divine attribute, but as a living presence within biblical and Jewish Wisdom traditions. We’ll enter Proverbs 8, Wisdom’s invitation, and her imagery of house, table, and tree.
Core question: What changes when Wisdom becomes Someone we encounter rather than an idea we study?
November 13 · The Tree Inside the Temple: Wisdom, Asherah & Sacred Presence
Enter the temple as a Wisdom-world through sacred tree imagery, feminine presence, temple cosmology, and the relationship between garden and Holy of Holies. This gathering forms a natural bridge from The Other Gate.
Core question: What did biblical sacred space look like before its imagery was braided with the Mosaic Covenantal narrative?
December 11 · Shabbat Is a Queen's Palace: Entering Sacred Time
A gathering rooted most explicitly in Shabbat itself and Wisdom's role in the tradition. We’ll explore sacred time as sanctuary, cessation as theological act, and very Wisdom-like traditions of Shabbat as Queen, Bride, and place of encounter.
Core question: What if holiness is a place we enter, rather than something we achieve?
January 15 · Wisdom in the Body: The Knowing Flesh as Sacred Text
This gathering brings the cosmology decisively into embodiment. Wisdom is practiced, tasted, spoken, walked, breathed, and sung. We’ll explore revelation in the old-fashioned, Divine Feminine way—with the body as recipient and living "holy text."
Core question: What does it mean to know Wisdom bodily and become the conduit of Her mysteries in our own flesh and bones?
February 12 · The Other Gate: Exile, Rupture & Returning to Wisdom
Here the historical breach becomes explicit. We explore the reforms that took Wisdom out of the temple and scattered Her feminine imagery. We also trace later survivals and transformations—those developments that now enable us to return to inherited religious traditions through Wisdom's older but less familiar door.
Core question: What do we do when the tradition we inherited contains both the wound and the path home?
March 12 · Living Beneath the Tree: What Does a Wisdom-Shaped Life Look Like?
Our culmination gathers the previous months into lived cosmology. We explore how to "walk with Wisdom" in our speech, time, discernment, hospitality, study, blessing, body, devotion, and ethical relationship. Together we honor the restorative powers of the "shade" of Her spreading tree, under which we have rested.
Core question: If Chokmah is real, how would we live differently?
